Musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology involves imaging of the bones, joints, muscles and other supportive soft tissues for diagnostic as well as therapeutic purposes. It includes X-rays as well as advanced imaging techniques such as CT, MRI, ultrasound and fluoroscopy. Interventional musculoskeletal radiology allows your doctor to perform a surgical procedure in a minimally invasive manner using the images as a guide, preventing the need for hospitalisation and general anaesthesia required for open surgeries. This may be used to treat various conditions of the musculoskeletal system.
Some techniques use real-time imaging which lets your doctor view live images to assess function and anatomy, and guide instruments to their correct location. This can be used to perform a biopsy (obtain tissue or fluid sample for laboratory analysis) or percutaneous treatment (instruments introduced through the skin through tiny incisions and guided to a target tissue or organ).
Interventional MSK radiology can be used in the treatment of painful joints to obtain fluids and to inject therapeutic agents or anaesthetic agents to verify the source of pain. CT imaging and/or fluoroscopy are used to guide interventional procedures including:
- Diskography: Diagnostic procedure to identify the spinal disk that is causing pain
- Percutaneous cementoplasty: Packing a damaged vertebra with cement to reinforce and prevent pain
- Percutaneous periradicular steroid injections: Steroid injected at painful nerve root to relieve low back pain
- Percutaneous laser nucleotomy: Removing part of a bulging spinal disk with laser to relieve nerve compression and pain
